What it is

Chlorination & Disinfection

Any new or significantly modified potable water system needs to be disinfected and proven clean before it's used — that's BS8558. The standard prescribes how, the certificate proves you did it, and the post-disinfection sample proves it worked.

We disinfect everything from a single replaced section of dead-leg through to a 60,000 m² hospital potable system. Every job comes with the certificate, the sample chemistry and the photographic evidence that closes out the works.

Building control will ask for it. The water authority will ask for it. The insurer will ask for it at first claim. The Legionella risk assessor will ask for it on the next review. Have it in your hand and the question goes away.

Operating from a Birmingham base, we mobilise chlorination and disinfection across Birmingham and the West Midlands same-day for both planned and emergency work, with UK-wide cover for multi-site clients.

When you need it

  • You're handing over a new build, refurb or extension with a new potable water system
  • You've replaced a calorifier, cold water storage tank, dead-leg or any significant section of pipework
  • A Legionella positive has come back and you need a certified disinfection response
  • A cold water storage tank is being returned to service after extended shutdown or empty period
  • Building control or the water authority has requested a BS8558 certificate
  • Your insurer is asking for evidence of certified disinfection on a recent install
Our scope

What's included as standard.

A typical engagement covers every line below. Where your scope needs more — multi-site rollout, white-label delivery, framework KPIs — we build it on top of this baseline.

01

Pre-Disinfection Survey

System verification, dead-leg identification, drain-point identification, RAMS and COSHH submitted in advance.

02

System Charging

Charging the system with sodium hypochlorite solution to a target free chlorine residual of 50 ppm (or per system specification).

03

Contact Time

One-hour contact time held, with confirmed residual at every outlet — distal, sentinel, tap-by-tap.

04

Neutralisation & Flush

Neutralisation with sodium thiosulphate and full flush to drain, with verified zero-chlorine residual before sample.

05

Sample Evidence

BS8558-compliant post-disinfection sampling via UKAS-accredited laboratory — TVC, coliforms, Pseudomonas, E. coli.

06

Certification

Chlorination certificate issued to BS8558, including system schematic, dose calculation, sample results and photographs.

Frequently asked

Answered by engineers.

When does a system need disinfection?
Before first use, after significant modification, after extended shutdown, after contamination, and as a corrective response to microbiological non-compliance. BS8558 sets out each scenario; your written scheme of control should reference all of them.
What does a BS8558 certificate include?
System description and schematic, scope of works, free chlorine dose and residual, contact time, neutralisation evidence, post-disinfection sample chain-of-custody and lab results, engineer sign-off and date. Anything less isn't a BS8558 certificate.
Do you also do tank cleans?
Yes — cold water storage tank cleans and chlorinations including drain-down, deposit removal, biofilm scrub, inspection, hypochlorite disinfection, refill and post-clean sample. Bundled with calorifier cleaning where required.
Can you handle emergency disinfections out of hours?
Yes. Our compliance contracts include 24-hour emergency response for positive Legionella results — typically on-site within hours, disinfection within the day, sample evidence inside 7 days.
Will the water authority accept your certificate?
Yes — our BS8558 certificates are routinely accepted by Severn Trent, Anglian, Thames, Yorkshire and other UK water authorities, as well as Welsh Water and Scottish Water. We can format the certificate to a specific authority's template on request.
