What it is

Cooling Tower Water Treatment & Management

Cooling towers are the highest-risk Legionella system the law recognises — which is why they have their own dedicated HSE guidance (HSG274 Part 1) and their own notification regime under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992. Get them wrong and you make headlines.

We deliver complete cooling tower management — chemical treatment, microbiological monitoring, weekly inspections, cleaning, Local Authority notification and the documentation that ties it all together.

The chemistry is the easy part. The hard part is the discipline of weekly checks, the discipline of dip slides hitting the lab on time, and the discipline of a six-monthly clean that's photographed, dated and added to the evidence pack — without exception. That's what we sell.

From our Birmingham base we run cooling tower treatment and cleaning across Birmingham and the West Midlands to the weekly discipline HSG274 demands, and extend the service UK-wide.

When you need it

  • You operate any evaporative cooling system and need an HSG274-compliant programme
  • You're commissioning new cooling plant and need notification + first-fill treatment
  • Your tower has a positive Legionella result and you need an immediate response
  • Microbiological counts are trending up and you need a biocide review
  • The drift eliminator, fill or distribution is past its life and you need a strip-down clean
  • You've inherited a tower with no records and need to build a defensible position from zero
Our scope

What's included as standard.

A typical engagement covers every line below. Where your scope needs more — multi-site rollout, white-label delivery, framework KPIs — we build it on top of this baseline.

01

Notification & Risk Assessment

Registration of the tower with the Local Authority (form CT1) and a written cooling-tower-specific Legionella risk assessment.

02

Chemical Treatment Programme

Biocide (oxidising and/or non-oxidising), scale and corrosion inhibitor, biodispersant — dosed continuously or slug-dosed per programme.

03

Weekly Inspections

Visual condition of pack, distribution, basin and drift eliminators; biocide residual; conductivity; pH; cycles of concentration.

04

Microbiological Monitoring

Monthly TVC dip slides, quarterly Legionella sampling to BS7592 via UKAS-accredited lab, action levels mapped to HSG274 Pt 1 Table 2.1.

05

Planned Cleaning

Six-monthly (or per risk assessment) strip-down cleans — pack, eliminators, basin, distribution — with photographic and chemical evidence.

06

Emergency Response

24-hour response to positive Legionella results, biocide failures or microbiological excursions — thermal/chemical disinfection and root-cause investigation.

Frequently asked

Answered by engineers.

Is my cooling tower notified with the Local Authority?
Every evaporative cooling tower and evaporative condenser must be registered with the LA under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992. If you don't know, the answer is probably no. We do this for you — form CT1, LA correspondence and a copy on your compliance file.
How often should a cooling tower be cleaned?
HSG274 Part 1 prescribes at least six-monthly strip-down cleans, more often if the risk assessment or microbiology requires. A clean isn't a wipe — it's a documented strip-down of pack, eliminators, distribution and basin with chemical disinfection and photographic evidence.
What are the HSG274 microbiological action levels?
TVC < 10,000 cfu/ml is satisfactory; > 10,000 requires action; > 100,000 requires immediate action including disinfection. Legionella < 100 cfu/L is the action threshold; > 1,000 cfu/L requires immediate disinfection and root-cause investigation. Your written scheme should map all four levels with a defined response.
Do you handle the LA notification?
Yes — first-time notification, annual updates, change of operator and decommissioning. We keep the notification record live on your behalf and produce evidence of it on request.
Can you manage cooling towers across multiple sites?
Most of our cooling tower clients operate two or more towers across multiple sites. We deliver a single programme across the portfolio — same treatment regime, same data, same KPIs — with a quarterly executive summary to the duty holder.
